Replica Wrap

by j3nn on March 18, 2011

I love recreating foods that I have at restaurants or purchased at the store. And sometimes, I even make them healthier. Like a salad with Panera Bread’s Orchard Harvest salad in mind.

Cherry Almond Salad

Or an unattractive, but tasty low-carb turkey burger Big Mac® imitation on a grain-free sesame seed bun with baked butternut squash fries.

Low-carb Big Mac knockoff

Low-carb rolls

And when I’m way too miles from the nearest Chipotle, I like to pretend my kitchen is just as much fun and assemble amazing pork tacos with all the fresh toppings I can think of.

After having a sandwich from Subway the other day, I was craving all of those glorious crunchy veggies again. I don’t think Subway is the greatest, BUT I really dig their assorted fresh veggies and wish more sandwich shops offered that. The veggies really make it. Well, that and the sweet onion sauce. ;) I didn’t have any sweet onion sauce or feel like making any, but I did have lots of fresh, crunchy veggies on hand! I also didn’t have any soft, squishy sub rolls, but I had a wrap. Good ’nuff.

No tomatoes, either. :( I stopped buying them in the winter other than grape tomatoes; I haven’t seen many that look appetizing.

2 slices Sargento reduced sodium provolone cheese, chopped mixed lettuce, baby cucumber, baby spinach, jalapeno pepper slices, banana peppers, bread & butter pickle chips, sliced black olives, and drops of Thousand Island dressing. Plus, a handful of chips on the side.

Pretty good! A few too many jalapeno peppers + banana peppers. And the wrap was very grainy, a little too much corn or oat or whatever in it that gives it an overwhelming flavor that I’m not too crazy about. Couldn’t even taste the cheese, was like it wasn’t even on there. Hate when that happens! Not surprised, though. I really only added it for protein. Definitely going to make another version of this sometime, only with better bread, and maybe even some kind of sweet onion sauce. Hmm… shouldn’t be too hard!

Question: What have you recreated lately? Links, link, links, please! :)

Busy day ahead! Zillions of things going on, both work and personal life. We’re going shopping in the morning, then going to my Aunt Stephanie’s house for my little cousin’s birthday party.

Have a great weekend, everyone!!! :)

I love that you made a “big mac” — I just love those. Even though they make me sick to my stomach after eating one, I still love them!

I feel like I haven’t cooked all week! Hopefully I’ll turn that around this weekend.

I love trying to make my own version of restaurant favorites!

I’m currently trying to recreate a sourdough bread I picked up last weekend!

That low carb turkey burger sounds tasty! I love butternut squash, and having them in fry-form sounds fantastic.

the pic of the salad, 1st shot is GREAT! Super clear, bright, detailed, in perfect focus. I wish ALL my photos turned out like that…i never know what’s going to, and what’s not. Cameras…can’t win sometimes. Haha!

Recreations? Oh tons. My kitchen adventures are one big recreation of gluten-ey and animal product-containing recipes. Trying to make mostly/all plant based AND GF renditions of traditional fare is my life’s work!

I loooove replicating things from restaurants, too!! And I agree with you on Subway; for some reason ( I know it’s not exactly the fanciest “restaurant” in the world) whenever I get something there it’s always way better than I expect it to be. I credit it to the fact that I never have that many fresh veggies on hand all at once ;)
I totally forgot about those grain-free buns, but if I’m remembering correctly they’re the ones with almond flour? I’m off to go check them out :]
